Italy has registered 37,978 new coronavirus infections in the past 24 hours, while the number of coronavirus-related deaths stood at 636.
The new infections on Thursday rose by more than 5,000 when compared to the previous day.
The single-day death toll is the highest figure registered since 6 April, according to the Italian health authorities.
Lombardy remains the worst hit region reporting 9,291 new cases.
Italy has reported 1.066 million coronavirus infections and 45,589 deaths to date.
