Italy registers sharp increase in new cases

642 positive cases, the highest since 23rd May

There has been a sharp increase in the number of new cases and victims of the Coronavirus in Italy over the past 24 hours, 642 new cases have been reported, 239 more than the day before. Seven people have lost their lives compared to 4 the day before. Swabbing is also on the increase – 71,000, nearly 20,000 more than the day before. The highest increases in the infected people have been in Lombardy (+91) and Emilia Romagna (+76).

This data was provided by the Ministry for Health. The daily tally is the highest since the 23rd May, when 669 cases were registered. Thus the total cases has gone up to 255,278, and the tally of dead persons up to 35,412. This trend in increase in infected cases has been on a steady incline throughout August, except for a decrease during a few days which coincided with a drop in the number of swabs. 

There was also an increase in the number of recoveries – 866 people who have recovered, 23 more than the previous 24 hours. There was also an increase in the number of people in intensive therapy (66, +8), while the patients in household isolation have increased by 240 (the total number is now 14,428). 

The number of people who are currently positive is 15,360 (+271). The patients who have been dismissed and who have been cured are now 204,506 (+364). The highest number of people in intensive therapy can be found in Lombardy (14), while Lazio has 229 people who have recovered with symptoms.
