The Italian health authorities have reported 37,809 new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours. The number recorded on Friday is highest ever daily tally to date, and an increase of more than 3,000 cases from the day before when 34,505 new infections were recorded.
The country registered 446 coronavirus-related deaths with the total number of deaths going up to 40,638.
The northern region of Lombardy reported 9,934 cases on Friday, with Piedmont recording 4,878.
To date, Italy has registered 862,681 infections.
Earlier this week, the Italian government announced new measures as it divided the country into three zone: red, orange and yellow.
