Italy assigned Lampedusa as a safe harbour to 82 people rescued by the charity vessel Ocean Viking, the humanitarian organisation Doctors Without Borders said on Twitter, on Saturday.
The vessel which is operated by SOS Méditerranée and MSF has 82 asylum seekers on board.
The Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported that the situation is being evaluated. The people on board will either be brought ashore on board the Ocean Viking or will be transferred to the Italian law enforcement agency, Guardia di Finanza, patrol boats.
The Interior Ministry has finally assigned a safe harbour to the remaining 82 asylum seekers who were rescued on 8 September. A heavily pregnant woman and her husband were airlifted to Malta during the week. The woman has since then, given birth at Mater Dei Hospital.
