Nationalist Party MP Jason Azzopardi was at the receiving end of abuse as he entered the party headquarters in Pietà this evening for a meeting of the party’s executive committee.
An elderly party activist was filmed by Newsbook as hurled insults at the MP, a prominent critic of embattled party leader Adrian Delia. At one point, the man was restrained by a fellow activist at one point in a bit to prevent the incident from escalating.
On Facebook, Azzopardi said that he empathised with the activist, stating that he was “blinded by the hatred and lies” fed by party insiders.
“A much greater responsibility has to be carried by those who within the Leadership aided, abetted & instigated a coordinated, planned, deliberate & ruthless character assassination of some MPs on social media from within the Dar Ċentrali,” he said.
PN MPs refused to give any comments to journalists gathered outside the party HQ as they entered the building.
In comments made on 103 on the programme Newsbook Hour, PN executive committee president Alex Perici Calascione stressed that the meeting would only serve to discuss vacant posts in the PN leadership. These comprise the post of secretary general, president of the administrative committee, treasurer, international secretary and the role he presently occupies. The terms for each of these posts had run out last November, but in light of the ongoing reform process steered by party veteran Louis Galea, the party had agreed to extend them to March.
Deputy leader for party affairs Robert Arrigo, who has given notice of his intention to resign, has announced that he is not interested in any role within the PN leadership.
