A passenger plane with an estimated 62 people on board has gone missing shortly after take-off from Jakarta, Indonesia.

The Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737 lost contact en route to Pontianak in West Kalimantan province, officials said.

Flightradar24.com, a flight tracking website, said that the aircraft had lost more than 3,000m in altitude in less than a minute.

BBC reported witnesses saying that they had seen and heard at least one explosion.

A fisherman told the BBC Indonesian service that the plane fell like a lightning into the sea and exploded in the water.

Transport Minister Budi Karya said that 62 passengers including 12 crew members were on board the plane.

Search and rescue efforts were under way.

The Indonesian airline said it was still gathering information about the flight.
