“If we do not allow the Church’s rebirth, it may be born lifeless” – Bishop Grech

“If we do not allow the Church to be reborn, it may suffer the same fate as an unborn baby trapped in prolonged labour, who is then born lifeless,” said Gozo’s Bishop Mgr. Mario Grech on Sunday.

During the Solemn Pontifical Mass on the occasion of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, in the Basilica dedicated to the same occasion in Xagħra, Bishop Grech stated his wish to see the Church reborn. He expressed this wish particularly as according to him, the occasion of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary ought to instil within one a wish to be reborn. He said that many wish the Church to retract back into the mother’s womb, and not experience its rebirth.

He addressed a group of youths forming part of the Jesus of Nazareth community, who are to embark on a missionary venture in Guatemala to join a further two Gozitan missionaries, Dun Anton Grech and Dun Mario Curmi.

“I wish you enough vigour bestowed by your mission in Guatemala to revitalise our Church in Malta upon your return”, he told them.

Bishop Grech maintained that one is to be a missionary not only in Guatemala, Perù or Brazil, but also in Gozo itself. He said that the youths are going to evangelise in Guatemala, but that there may come a time when the Church in Malta may need evangelists once again.
