Watch: “I want to see the Church closer to people” – Cardinal Elect

“I want to see the Church closer to people,” Cardinal Elect Mario Grech said in an exclusive interview on Andrew Azzopardi on 103, hosted by Professor Azzopardi himself on Saturday.

Pope Francis will elevate 13 clerics to the College of Cardinals, the group of red-robed churchmen whose primary task is to elect a new pope. It’s the seventh time Francis has named a new batch of cardinals since his election in 2013.

Speaking on 103FM – Malta’s Heart, Mgr Grech said that he would like to continue bringing the Church closer to the people, when speaking ahead of his appointment, adding that he would continue on the work he carried out through his priesthood.

“Until last night, I was not really understanding what is happening. But then I started receiving messages from parishioners and others, wishing me well, saying that they will keep me in their prayers,” Cardinal Elect Grech said. He explained that the road is made by walking it.

Asked whether he ever dreamt of becoming a Cardinal, Mgr Grech chuckled and said that his only ambition was to become a parish priest and work closely with the community he is assigned to.
