‘I found 5 lifeless angels on the spot,’ Police officer marks 14 years since traffic accident

Police Officer Eman Cilia marked the tragic death of five youths which happened 14 years ago on Mdina Road.

Described as the ‘worst ever traffic accident’, five youths, David Sacco, 13, Fabio Magro, 16, Marco Abdilla, 17, Oswaldo Emanuel Vella, 18, and Christian Camilleri, 18, were killed on impact.

The youths were members of the St Maria Youth Band Committee were returning home from a barbecue when the incident happened.

In a Facebook post, Cilia recalled when he got the call around 1.50 am and was asked to rush to Mdina Road, Żebbuġ.

‘On-site I found five angels all of them laying without lives on the spot,’ Cilia wrote. He still has a vivid memory of the scene.

The then 22-year-old driver had lost control over his van, with the five youths being thrown out of the van by the impact. Two passengers and the driver survived the incident.

The youths had booked a minivan back home, however, it did not turn up and were offered a lift back home.
