House of Commons Speaker to step down

Tista' taqra bil- Malti.

John Bercow has announced that he will stand down as Speaker of the United Kingdom’s House of Commons by October 31. Bercow has served for ten years in this position.

Bercow, whose cries of, “Order, Order!” have gone viral, told the House that he would step down sooner if MPs vote for Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s snap general election.

The House of Commons is set to vote for the second bid for an election on Monday. Opposition parties have already made it known that they will not be backing the snap election, to avoid a no-deal Brexit.

The Speaker of the House of Commons would oversee parliamentary debates, deciding who can speak and choosing amendments.

The Tories have already declared that they would be voting to against the re-election Bercow as Speaker.

Government MPs have accused Bercow of using his position of neutrality to obstruct a no-deal Brexit.
