Partit Demokratiku said that racism has to be nipped at the bud. In a statement on Sunday after the arraignment of two soldiers, the Democratic Party described the murder allegedly committed by two AFM officers as ‘worrying and disgusting’, saying that it goes completely against the values ‘our nation is meant to profess’.
PD said that one must also question why the Prime Minister only now took a stand against racism after the involvement of the soldiers was revealed resulting in criticism against the government.
PD blamed tribalism as the ‘greatest source of hatred and sexism’. The party argued that if one supports political parties and politicians who play to the lowest common denominator, if one is silent then one is not better than such people. PD further said that such attitude betrays the values which makes one Maltese.
In their statement the party underlined the need to act on other points such as enforcing the concept of equal pay for equal work where migrant workers are concerned, enforcing European standards of accommodation, not giving air time to people who call themselves politicians on national media, education programs among others.
