Govt allocates funds to animal sanctuaries and NGOs

The government announced that funds have been allocated under the Animal Welfare Fund to continue helping animal sanctuaries so that they can invest in infrastructure and capital projects with the aim to improve their site facilities.

Animal sanctuaries such as the AAA-Abandoned Animals Association and NGOs are amongst those who received the funds.

In a statement, the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights explained that for 2020 the government increased the allocation of funds towards the Animal Welfare Fund to € 85,000. However, the government will be giving € 115,680 to 15 NGOs, half of which were donated on Wednesday and a further 30% of €115,680 is expected to be awarded in May.

The government collaborated with the State Attorney’s office to amend the contracts so that another 30% could be awarded, in view of the difficulties that NGOs are facing due to the current situation of COVID-19.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Anton Refalo visited the AAA sanctuary, Abandoned Animals Association and emphasised that together with the NGOs the Ministry is constantly working diligently to give animals the care they need.
