The government is planning to establish or renovate health centres in every locality in the next three years. This was announced by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health Chris Fearne, in Kirkop on Thursday.
Renovation works are being carried out at the Victoria Health centre and the Ċensu Moran Regional Hub in Paola. The health centres in Attard, Gżira, Pietà, Sliema, Żurrieq, Żebbuġ and Xewkija have already underwent renovation. A new regional hub is planned for the south of Malta, whilst in the coming year health centres in Mellieħa, Marsaxlokk, Valletta, Vittoriosa, Fgura, Santa Lucia, Għaxaq and Tarxien will be opened or refreshed.
The projects will be funded from the €10 million that has been provided by the National Development Social Fund.
Decentralisation of health services
Fearne also stated that in the one year since its establishment at total of 200,000 patients have utilised the services at the Kirkop Health Centre.
Plans to create a podology centre of excellence in Birkirkara are also in the pipeline. Whilst mental health services will be provided at the Pietà, Attard and Żurrieq health centres.
GU Clinics will also be provided in a number of health centres in the coming future.
