Government appears to give BirdLife the cold-shoulder

The Government announced the opening of bird hunting season this Saturday, 1st September despite a letter sent by Birdlife requesting that the Government postpones the hunting season opening until 15th October.

During a news conference, BirdLife explained that when the hunting season is to be opened, various illegalities occur especially since during this time, many protected birds will be passing over Malta. In fact, a record of 82 birds were illegally shot last year and this year a new record could be broken unless the protection of birds and regularization of hunting is not taken seriously.

BirdLife also proposed the establishment of the Police’s Wildlife Crime Unit which must be equipped with resources to ensure that the environmental laws are being enforced.
