Government charters third private vessel to hold 121 asylum seekers at sea

A third private vessel, Bahari, owned by Captain Morgan has been chartered by the government to hold 121 asylum seekers out of a group of 140 which were rescued over the past two days, has learnt.

From the 140 group, 19 asylum seekers consisting of women and children, and pregnant women were brought to Malta on Friday evening by the Armed Forces of Malta, the government said in a brief statement not disclosing the number of the whole group.

The asylum seekers which were allowed to disembark were taken away to the initial reception centre and are now under quarantine.

Government sources have confirmed that the search and rescue operation took place over the past two days.

There are currently a group of 57 and a group of 105 individuals on Europa II and Atlantis.
