The Government is working on an ‘Affordable Housing’ scheme for people who do not fall under the parameters of needing ‘Social Housing’, but still need help acquiring a primary residence.

Parliamentary Secretary for Social Accomodation Roderick Galdes spoke of the need for the ‘Affordable Housing’ scheme arising after White Paper on the rent industry in Malta identified a section of the population who need it. This was during a meeting with the Malta Developers Association (MDA).

A number of models are being looked into, such as a partnering with the private sector, which was proposed by the MDA, and even renovation of abandoned homes. A foundation to manage affordable housing for rent was also spoken about.
