The party will renew itself if Partit Nazzjonalista councillors opt to go for a new leadership contest, the majority of Partit Nazzjonalista MPs said in a joint statement on Friday afternoon.
Embattled Partit Nazzjonalista leader Adrian Delia has lost two confidence votes within a week. It was only on Thursday that the party’s executive committee decided that its general council will vote on whether the party members should be invited to confirm Delia as party leader or hold a leadership election.
Reflecting on Thursady’s decision, the majority of the MPs said that it was an important decision which would allow the party emerge from the dark period it found itself in, remarking that by the end of summer, a new party leader could be elected.
The General Council of Partit Nazzjonalista will convene on 31 July to decide between asking paid up members to confirm Delia as the PN leader or to elect a new leader. The General Council will then vote on Saturday 1 August.
“We trust that the General Council will take the decision in the best interest of the party – that is a leadership race,” the MPs said.
They remarked that the party would then be renewed and prepared for the upcoming electoral tests.
“This is a historic moment for Partit Nazzjonalista. We can turn the page and rebuild the party as an organised, united, front for the country and the party itself,” they said.
