Giglio disagrees with co-option proposal for Busuttil’s seat

Lawyer Joe Giglio said on Facebook that he does not agree that he or someone else should take up MP Simon Busuttil’s seat in Parliament through a co-option.

Busuttil was appointed Secretary-General of the group EPP in the European Parliament, and will, therefore, be resigning from his post as an MP in the Maltese Parliament.

Giglio stated that he will be increasing his involvement in Partit Nazzjonalista (PN) “in due time”. He thanked all those who wished that he takes up a more active role in Parliament, but added that he still does not agree with the co-option proposal.

“The electoral law lays down the procedure in these situations – it should be done by-election. Apart from the legal reason, I believe that the co-option creates injustice among the district candidates who contested in the last General Election.”

Busuttil will be handing over his office “in the coming weeks”.

Graziella Galea and David Thake have already announced that they would be interested in taking Busuttil’s seat.
