From Gozo to Malta: free palm fronds for fishermen

As from now, palm fronds will be available to Maltese fishermen from the Government. Up to the present day, this was only available to Gozitan fishermen.

Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries Clint Camilleri announced the initiative ahead of the lampuki season, which opens on the 15th August, during a meeting with several fishermen at Ghammieri. Fishermen use palm fronds when weaving large, flat rafts or what is known in Maltese as kannizzati in order to catch lampuki.

Camilleri said that the Government this year decided to visit public places where palm trees were being pruned and hand out these fronds to the fishermen. According to Camilleri the Government intends on planting more palm trees in order to have enough fronds for the fishermen.
