Vice President of the European Commission, and Commissioner for the Rule of Law Frans Timmermans launched his campaign for the Presidency of the Commission with a passionate speech during the congress of the Socialist Party in Lisbon.
In a packed hall at Cidade University, and in front of Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa, and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Timmermans said that a win for S&D in European Elections is the only way to ensure a more free, just, and sustainable European society.
Timmermans said that these are not ordinary elections, but they are elections related to the soul of Europe. He added that, while countries need to adapt to a changing world, socialism is a political force that has the capacity to help, saying that the S&D need to have a social contract with European citizens.
The PES Congress in Lisbon saw the progressives preparing for the May elections. There were thousand of participants from 56 countries who passed eight resolutions including an ambitious programme to create a platform to invest in communities.
