The Royal Naval Ship Mast at Fort St. Angelo has been dismantled for maintenance by Heritage Malta in collaboration with the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. The operation involved months of assessment in order to carry out this exercise efficiently, considering that the historic mast has never been taken down for maintenance since Royal Navy left the Fort in 1979.
The ship mast dates back to the early 20th century and is the only surviving example of an iconic landmark in the historic stronghold of the Maltese Islands. The signs of deterioration were evident and Heritage Malta’s technical team had to fabricate a new system on which the pole could be pivoted. The ship mast was brought down in a two hour operation and a restoration schedule will follow. The ship mast will be restored once all required conservation is completed.
