Former Deputy Police Commissioner Silvio Valletta is under police investigation.
The police replied to various media questions including those sent by Newsbook.com.mt confirming that Valletta is indeed under police investigation. The Police said that as soon as the report was published about Valletta travelling with Daphne Caruana Galizia murder suspect Yorgen Fenech, an investigation was initiated on Sunday.
The Police added that Valletta was called in for questioning in view of the recent allegations at the Police Headquarters. The allegations are being investigated, the Police said on Tuesday.
On Sunday it was revealed that Valletta travelled abroad with Daphne Caruana Galizia murder suspect, Yorgen Fenech when the latter had already been identified as a person of interest in the case. The two travelled together to watch a football match at Chelsea FC Stamford Bridge Stadium in September 2018. Valletta has denied knowledge of Fenech being under investigation in connection to the case.
On Tuesday it was also revealed that some months earlier, Valletta had travelled with Fenech to watch the Champions League final in May 2018 in Kiev, Ukraine.
Valletta who had been involved in the murder investigation, was ordered off the case after a ruling by judge Silvio Meli who had ordered Valletta to desist from taking part in the investigation. The court case was filed by the Caruana Galizia family that accused Valletta of a conflict of interest because of his marriage to a cabinet minister, Justyne Caruana, and role as a board member of the Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit (FIAU). The decision by the court was confirmed on appeal.
