Friends of the Earth Malta (FoE Malta) have welcomed and commented on the publication of the Proposal for a Directive on the reduction of the impact of certain plastic products on the environment by the European Commission.
In a statement, FoE (Malta) said that over the past 30 years they have been increasingly active in favour of the reduction of plastic waste. Following a recent consultation with ERA, FoE Malta proposed:
- Put single-use plastic reduction and reuse first
- Don’t fall for bio-based or biodegradable plastics
- Strengthening of Extended Producer Responsibility measures
- High collection, better marking/labelling and strengthened product requirements
Fitting advice coming at a time just after toxic plumes of smoke from burning plastic dominated the Maltese skyline mere days ago.
Here is a detailed look at the recommendations by Friends of the Earth Malta.
