First Holy Communion controversy: Archbishop wishes to meet family

Archbishop Charles Scicluna expressed his wish to meet the family of a girl who has autism who, reports have said, was not given the First Communion certificate as she did not ingest the Holy Eucharist.

A spokesperson for the Curia told that the Archbishop was not aware of this incident. He went on to say that the Archbishop takes these cases seriously, and that they are handled in a sensitive manner.

The spokesperson stressed that a disability does not impede an individual from receiving the First Communion. Indeed, people with disabilities receive the Eucharist regularly. He explained that this includes children suffering from autism.
