Partit Demokratiku has said that the fault for the current disasters in the construction industry lie with the Government.
The political party related this to a severe lack of strong government and a high level of political interest and influence on key authorities driven by construction and other dangers to the economy.
PD Interim Leader, Godfrey Farrugia highlights problems with there being a lack of a regulatory framework to prevent fraudulent or ‘misleading’ impact assessments by developers ‘are acted upon’ or a special Lobbyist Register to prevent special interests dictating the agenda of authorities.
PD representative Dr Anthony Buttigieg stated that, ‘The recent construction disasters are an acute symptom of a chronic condition. It is also linked to a lack of, or selective, enforcements.’
Going further, the PD states that it finds it ‘pathetic’ that the Planning Authority had to wait for the Prime Minister to make a decree on suspending construction permits. ‘This is not how democracy and good governance should be exercised.’
They add that for this reason, the organisation will be joining the Public Protest over the condition of the construction industry.
