The European Parliament opened their Plenary Session today with a moment of silence paying tribute to Pawel Adamowicz, the Mayor of Gdansk who succumbed to injuries after being publicly stabbed Sunday.
EP President Antonio Tajani led the tribute as a reminder of victims of violent attacks in Europe. He spoke of proposing to the EP’s Vice-Presidents that the EP radio studio be named after Journalists Antonio Megalizzi and Barto Pedro Orent-Niedzielski who died during a terrorist attack in Strasbourg in December.
In a statement by the EP, it was said that President Tajani “appealed for open debate not to degenerate, as verbal and physical violence go hand in hand” after listing several violent attacks in Europe in the recent past. He will also be speaking with the Mayor of Strasbourg to discuss paying tribute to the victims of December’s attack.
Too often words turns into violence. Hate speech must be quashed – it is not compatible with the EU's model for peaceful coexistence. I call on everyone to exercise restraint, especially on social media. pic.twitter.com/4Xhg9C8S9B
