Etienne Bartolo sentenced to 5 years in prison for excessive defence

Etienne Bartolo, known as “Il-Vojt”, was found guilty of excessive defence in his trial by jury for the murder of Roderick Grech in Birkirkara 3 years ago. He was sentenced to 5 years in prison.

After 6 hours of deliberation, the jury delivered the verdict of 7 votes against 2. Therefore, 39 year old Bartolo was not found guilty of involuntary homicide. Bartolo was unanimously found guilty of being armed without a licence and of disrupting public peace.

Judge Consuelo Scerri Herrera delivered the judgement of 5 years imprisonment.

Roderick Grech was 26 years old when he was killed. Bartolo stood accused of having fatally stabbed Grech in 2017 in Birkirkara over drug payments.

The Defence was led by lawyer Mark Vassallo, whilst the Prosecution was represented by lawyers Kevin Valletta and Maria Francesca Spiteri from the Attorney General’s Office.

Lawyers Franco Debono and Amadeus Cachia are appearing for the victim’s family.
