Election for Scicluna’s vacated seat to be held next week

Next week a by-election will be held on the seventh electoral district. The parliamentary seat got vacated following the appointment of Prof. Edward Scicluna to Governor of the Central Bank of Malta.

In the 2017 snap election, the frontrunner was former Rabat mayor Charles Azzopardi who finished the race with 2,179 votes. Former PN MP Jeffery Pullicino Orlando had gained 1,040 votes while Gavin Gulia had gained 1,569 votes.

Asked by Newsbook.com.mt if he is interested in submitting his nomination for this election, Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando has already confirmed with Newsbook.com.mt that he will submit his nomination.

Gavin Gulia said that he will be awaiting that the election is announced.

Charles Azzopardi, who was not allowed to contest the 2019 local elections on behalf of the PL, following corruption allegations when he was mayor. However, the Labour Party cannot stop Azzopardi from contesting for the seat of Prof. Edward Scicluna. If he gets elected, he will sit with the independent parliamentarians.

Newsbook.com.mt tried to reach Mr Azzopardi without success.

The election will be held Tuesday 12 January at 8:30 am.

Eligible candidates who contested the Seventh Electoral District in the June 2017 General Election and who were not elected, may present their nomination form as from Tuesday 5 till Saturday 9 January, 2021, at the Electoral Commission’s Office at Evans Building, Merchants Street, Valletta, between 9.00a.m. and noon.
