Elderly woman living in her Mellieħa home when it collapsed, dies

The elderly woman who was rescued from her home in Mellieħa after an adjacent building collapsed, has died.

The 77 year old British woman had been trapped in her bedroom when the block of flats she was living in collapsed into a construction site next door.

The incident happened at around 6.15AM on 8th June on the Main Street Mellieħa.

Most of the collapsed block ended up in the construction site and into the road.

Smith’s daughter explained that she had been heading to the Airport for a flight to England when the incident occurred.

The collapse in Mellieħa was the second incident which has occurred within the space of three weeks, the first happening in Gwardamanga.

The incident prompted the Prime Minister to end all excavation works until a consultation could be held into improving building regulations.
