Protests have erupted in Rio de Janeiro after an eight-year-old girl was allegedly killed by Brazilian police.

Ágatha Vitória Sales Félix was with her mother in a van when she was shot in the back on Friday, BBC News reported.

Some locals living in the poor area said that officers were targeting a motorcyclist when Ágatha was shot. On the other hand, Police said they were responding to an attack.

A breath-taking amount of 1,249 people have died in such raids in Rio from January to August, with Ágatha believed to be the fifth child to die as a result of violence blamed on the Police.
