8 percent of the world’s top conductors are women

A study by classical music website Bachtrack has revealed that female conductors now make up eight of the world’s 100 top maestros.

The figures, also show that in 2013 there was just one woman in the top 100, American maestro Marin Alsop.

The research also found that 24 of the top 100 contemporary composers are women – double the figure of 2017.

Cecilia McDowall was 2019’s most performed female contemporary composer, followed by Judith Weir, Anna Meredith and Jennifer Higdon.
