EastEnders actress Dame Barbara Windsor dies aged 83

According to her husband Scott Mitchell, Dame Barbara Windsor, known for her roles in EastEnders and the Carry On films, died peacefully from Alzheimer’s at a London care home.

She had been diagnosed with the disease in 2014. After her diagnosis she became an ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Dame Barbara appeared in nine of the 31 films in the comedy series Carry On, as well as in the film Sparrows Can’t Sing (for which she was nominated for a Bafta). She also had appeared in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and worked in theatre.

To many TV enthusiasts, she was known as landlady Peggy Mitchell in the BBC soap EastEnders. Her last appearance came in 2016.

Tributes have poured in from actors and other personalities, including Patsy Palmer, Matt Lucas and Tony Blackburn who said she was a “lovely lady who was always such fun”.
