According to the European Commission (EC), the countries of the European Union (EU) could save as much as 600 million annually if they consume water from the tap instead of buying it in plastic bottles.

In a press release the Environment Committee of the European Parliament (EP) reiterated its support for the Commission’s Drinking Water Directive and considers it an important step in the implementation of the EU Plastics Strategy that aims for the presence of less plastic in our environment.

The Committee proposes that water should be more accessible for the EU citizens and this should be provided free of charge in catering establishments like restaurants and canteens.

The EP insists that the new legislation aims to limit the amounts of chemicals and other substances like lead and micro plastics as these should not be found in drinking water.
