A €50 fine will be levied on those who refuse to wear a face mask where required, in crowded places such as buses, shops and the Gozo ferry.
The decision came in the wake of an 8-hour meeting of the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development held on Thursday.
The measure has nevertheless failed to impress the Medical Association of Malta, which will be continuing the doctors’ strike over the government’s continued refusal to call an end to mass events, in spite of an expected record number of cases on Friday.
The fine may recall another levied earlier in the pandemic, a €100 fine on those breaching social distancing requirements by congregating in groups. But Prime Minister Robert Abela controversially announced an amnesty as restrictions were loosened.
The government has also announced that two new testing hubs will be opened in light of strong demand which has seen the waiting times for a test grow considerably in recent days.
