The Customs Department seized a 44kg cocaine shipment on its way to Cyprus from Ecuador, with an approximate street value calculated to be 4.5 million euros.
In a statement, the Customs Department explained that a refrigerated container coming from Ecuador was selected for scanning following risk analysis carried out by the Department’s Container Monitoring Unit. Following the scan, several packets containing white substance were located, and consequently discovered hidden, behind a panel above the refrigerant compressor.
The Customs Officials found a total of 35 individual packets weighing a total of 44kg were elevated. The substance was tested and the preliminary results pointed to a positive indication for cocaine.
The Police Anti Drug Squad took over the case for further investigations while duty magistrate Joe Mifsud is leading the magisterial inquiry.
