A regeneration project in 46 social housing blocks will be carried out in the localities of Siġġiewi, Cospicua, Rabat, Santa Luċija, Ħal Qormi, Żejtun and Saint Julian’s throughout 2020. This was announced by Minister for Social Accommodation Roderick Galdes, who explained that 500 families will benefit from this investment of €2.6 million.

“I do not consider this as an investment in the buildings themselves, but an investment in the quality of life of our families,” explained Minister Galdes.

He continued to explain that during last year the government carried out a regeneration project on a total of 77 blocks in an investment which was worth €4 million.

The works, which will be carried out this year, shall include waterproofing of roofs, general embellishment of the common areas and the refurbishment of facades and balconies.

The works shall be supervised by the Housing Authority, in collaboration with the Housing, Maintenance and Embellishment Ltd.

The Chief Executive Officer, CEO, of the Housing Authority Leonid McKay remarked that these projects are being carried out in parallel with wider initiatives being promoted by the authority. This includes maintenance works in social housing apartments following reports from tenants. Around 1,010 interventions were carried out last year through an investment of more than €2 million.

Leonid Mckay said that the Housing Authority is also engaged in another project in collaboration with local councils, wherein it conducts works in common parts of various estates, with an investment of around €400,000 in 2019, which affected around 400 families.
