Dr Tonio Borg is among over twenty Maltese citizens recognised during the Republic Day honours and awards ceremony today.
The former Member of the Maltese Parliament, Dr Borg was one of twelve people honoured with the National Order of Merit.
Dr Borg, who once served as the Deputy leader of the Nationalist party, spent twenty years of his life in Maltese politics, followed by a brief period in the European Parliament serving as a board member for the European Medicines Agency.
The former politician is also an accomplished author and is currently a resident lecturer of Public Law at the University of Malta. He is credited with having the first analysis on the Maltese constitution, ‘A Commentary on the Constitution of Malta’.
Mr Borg was joined by a number of fellow politicians, academics, performers and social philanthropists.

Mr John Dalli is a former political activist and entrepreneur. Dalli is remembered for introducing tower cranes and concrete pumps to Malta.

Mr Vassallo is a former primary healthcare worker and Labour politician best known for his work on social affairs and family. He left politics in 2008. Since 1991, he has worked as a medical doctor for sports organisations across the 9th district.
EMMANUELE F M EMANUELE DI VILLABIANCA UOM (HON)
With a career spanning a number of different professions including banking, writing and academia, the Baron of Culcasi has been seeking to Malta a place for cancer research for a number of years.
MICHIO ENDO UOM (HON)
Mr Endo originally from Japan, had worked with the Maltese Tourism Authority, seeking to make the country an attractive destination for Japanese tourists, both through publications and several million euros worth of broadcast advertising for Malta.

Joan Abela is a Senior Lecturer in Legal History and Methodology at the Faculty of Laws, University of Malta and currently holds the post of Consultant Historian in the Rehabilitation of the Notarial Archives ERDF Project.

Michael J. Bianchi is an established entrepreneur, and has been involved in a range of diversified activities, including the introduction of mobile telephony and of the Internet to Malta.
PAUL FALZON SANT MANDUCA MOM
A successful entrepreneur who has headed multiple companies throughout his career. At the age of 38, he became the Executive Chairman of the renowned Touche Remnant, an investment trust management company.
MGR JOSEPH FARRUGIA MOM
Mgr. Farrugia is an ordained priest and educator who set up of the University Gozo Campus, where he gave the very first course in Mediterranean civilizations and religions.
ALBERT MARSHALL MOM
A distinguished theatre and television director, playwright, poet, and TV presenter in a career spanning over 50 years. His literary and theatrical career started during the 1960s. During this time, Marshall was one of the founding members of the Moviment Qawmien Letterarju. Mr Marshall currently occupies the positions of Deputy Chairman of PBS Ltd and Executive Chair of Arts Council Malta.
CLAYTON MICALLEF MOM
Mr Micallef is a former soldier in the Maltese Army who suffered an accident which left him paralysed. A pilot project was funded and set up in 2010 funded allowing him to live in the comfort of his own home with personal aid. He currently raised money and runs awareness campaigns for disabled people and social issues.
CHARLES MICELI MOM (POSTHUMOUS)
A writer and journalist who has written on political and social issues for l-Orizzont and it-Torċa. Mr Miceli had worked to open Dar Papa Franġisku, and led campaigns to raise the minimum wage and to regulate rent rates.

A tireless proponent and educator of the Maltese language and culture. He was instrumental in the initiation of a popular Maltese song festival in Australia in 1974.
ARTHUR GRUPPETTA MQR
A teacher and former head of the Merlin Library and Publishers. He published the first-ever workbooks for the teaching of Maltese in primary schools back in 1979.
JOSEPHINE MAHONEY MQR
A renowned Maltese actress who spent more than 70 years in radio, stage, and television productions. Mahoney also wrote an autobiographical book, Oh Żmien Ħelu, where she discussed the theatrical scene, the elegant and rich costumes and also the different types of acting and the terminology used at that time. Her numerous performance choices reflect the most popular elements in the Maltese cultural scene.
ĠANNI PACE MQR
A renowned sculptor and artist who has been mastering his artistic talent from a very young age. His art is defined as folk art with its subject area being the poor and marginalised. From his exhibitions, he has always donated works or part of his earnings to the Community Chest fund and to Dar tal-Providenza.
ĠORĠ PERESSO MQR
A well-known author, writer, and broadcaster. He is well known for his Maltese novels, poems, plays and radio-plays. He still writes and produces programmes for Radju Malta, Campus FM, and community radio stations.
DAVID MICHAEL SCHEMBRI MQR
Is currently a Qrendi Council Mayor with a depth of experience and passion for the environment and conservation. He has been involved in a number of underwater surveys of WW2 wrecks around the Maltese islands. He also represented and captained the Malta XV in Rugby Union.
SIMON SCHEMBRI MQR
Schembri is a traffic police constable whose list of accolades include assisting and escorting a pregnant woman to hospital in traffic as well as surviving a traffic accident which led to him losing an arm. He has established The Blue Light Foundation, which is a non-profit organisation providing moral support, psychological help, and financial aid to employees serving in emergency response and disciplined forces who suffer physical injury in the line of duty.
FRANK LAWRENCE SCICLUNA MQR
Scicluna was the co-founder and first president of the Federation of Maltese Language in Australia, as well as serving as the president of the Maltese Community of South Australia and the Australian Federation of Maltese Community Councils. In 2011, he was appointed by the Prime Minister of Malta as a delegate of the Council of Maltese Living Abroad.
LOUIS JOHN VELLA MQR
Mr Vella is a Maltese community leader based in California USA, who is focused on fostering and embracing the Maltese culture, and to bring Malta more accessible California. He currently serves as Honorary Consul for Malta, and has served two 3-year terms on the Council of Maltese Living Abroad.
BERND SCHIFFARTH MQR (HON)
Originally from Germany, Herr Schiffarth has worked on the improvement and consolidation of the human relations between the citizens of Malta and Germany with great engagement. He managed in 1996 to create “Town Twinning – Ġemellaġġ” in Malta between Mellieħa and Adenau, Germany. This was the start of a permanent exchange of students, musicians, artists, and members of separate organisations from Malta and Germany.
