Do not abandon pets for fear of contracting coronavirus – Prof. Gauci

The Superintendent for Public Health Prof. Charmaine Gauci appealed to the public to not abandon animals because of coronavirus.

On Monday, during the daily briefing on the coronavirus cases in Malta, Newsbook.com.mt asked Prof. Gauci if people can contract the virus from animals as Fgura local councillor, Adrian Tanti, contacted this newsroom saying he has been receiving reports that people are abandoning their pet as they fear they can contract coronavirus from their pet.

Prof Gauci explained that at this stage there are no studies which show that humans can contract the virus from animals. However, animals can contract coronavirus through humans.

During the press conference, it was also explained that whenever a person tests positive to the virus health authorities evaluate the household situation too. In such cases they advice coronavirus patients who have pets to ask someone else to take care of their pet.

By abandoning our pets we would be creating another undesired problem, said Prof. Gauci.
