Degiorgio brothers in fresh bail request; claim human rights breach

Brothers Alfred and George Degiorgio, known as il-Fulu and iċ-Ċiniż respectively, who stand charged together with Vince Muscat of the murder of the journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, have made a fresh request for bail and demanded to be electronically tagged.

In their constitutional application filed with the First Hall of the Civil Court, the Degiorgios demanded a compensation for what they are claiming to be a breach of human rights. The Degiorgios said that in a separate court case related to money laundering charges they were granted bail. However the appeals court had overturned the decision following an appeal by the Attorney General.

Lawyer William Cuschieri, who signed the application, said that it was clear that the criminal courts would never grant the men bail, after it had expressed their opinion against. The men asked the court to declare a breach of their human rights, grant them bail and liquidate compensation for the damages they have suffered.
