The Malta Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society (MFWS) said that critical thought is crucial for democracy.

In a post on Facebook on the occasion of the International Literacy Day, the foundation appealed to the authorities to do its utmost to eradicate illiteracy for good. It also urged families to put literacy at the centre of family life.

The foundation which was set up by President Emeritus Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, said that according to the Labour Force Survey over half of the work force have a very limited skills set, which includes literacy. MFWS finds this data unacceptable in the climate of economic growth; as such lack of skills creates obstacles to achieve a position of leadership in the country’s democratic culture.
