Internal Affairs Minister Michael Farrugia has announced that work will be carried on the Civil Protection Department’s stations ensuring that they are well-protected in the case of earthquakes. Malta is working closely with Italy on the renovation.
Minister Farrugia was speaking during the opening of the 36th National Assembly of the European Seismological Commission. Farrugia said that, although it has been over 100 years since the last significant seismic activity on the island, it was “better to be safe than sorry”.
Other speakers at the assembly included H.E. the President of Malta Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, the President of the European Seismological Commission Prof. Ina Cecic and the Rector of the University of Malta Prof. Alfred J Vella.
