COVID-19 is impacting many things, our humanity should not be one of them – KNŻ

The National Youth Council, KNŻ issued its position on the current migration crisis stating that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic should not be understated even if our lives have changed drastically since this pandemic began and that people are feeling uncertain about the future.

KNŻ has also signed the petition calling on Prime Minister Robert Abela to take action by saving the migrants.

The KNŻ said that as a nation, we cannot sit idly by and watch as innocent people drown in our waters.

The current COVID-19 pandemic, the limited space, and the stretched resources are concerns which do not justify disregard for our humanitarian and international obligations, said the Council.

“The persons on board the vessels in distress should be allowed to enter our ports, disembarked and quarantined. Our priority at this point should be to ensure that the persons currently in distress in our waters are safe on land” – KNŻ.

The National Student’s Council has also called on all EU Member States to shoulder their responsibility in fulfilment of burden sharing obligations as the lack of inaction to implement a permanent EU relocation system has already cost lives.
