Covid-19 deaths surge in Spain and Italy

Spain recorded 537 new coronavirus deaths on Tuesday, while Italy reported a further 853 deaths.

For Spain, this is the highest daily toll seen so far in the country’s second wave after 435 deaths were recorded last week. In the case of Italy, this is the highest daily toll since the end of March.

12,228 new coronavirus infections were reported in Spain on Tuesday while 23,232 new infections were recorded in Italy.

To date Spain has recorded 1,594,844 cases and the virus has claimed 43,668 lives in the country.

Over 12,000 lives were claimed since the beginning of November in Italy with the death toll standing at 50,453 since February.

According to the federation of Italian doctors 27 medics died within the last ten days while 27,000 health workers have contracted the virus over the last month.

The highest daily death count so far was reached on 29 March, when 969 fatalities were registered.
