Austria will introduce a national lockdown on Tuesday, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz confirmed on Saturday.
During the press conference announcing the new measures, Kurz said that more than 77% of new infections cannot be traced back to their source anymore in Austria.
He asked all Austrians to reduce their social contacts to the absolute minimum in the next weeks and only meet people they live in the same household with.
The lockdown is being imposed in a bid to bring the number of coronavirus cases under control.
People will be required to stay home, with specific exceptions such as shopping for essential or exercise. Non-essential shops will be closed.
Whenever it is possible people should work from home, Kurz said.
The lockdown will be from 17 November until 6 December.
