Court accepts Repubblika’s request to bring forward judiciary appointments hearing

The Constitutional Court has accepted a request by rule of law NGO, Repubblika, bringing forward the next hearing of the case on the appointment of six members of the judiciary.

In a statement, Repubblika said that the Constitutional Court has moved the next hearing to Monday from October 30.

The hearing of the case by the Constitutional Court was interrupted by an appeal by the Government that was in most part quashed by the Court of Appeal last Friday.

Following the decision by the Appeal’s Court, lawyer Jason Azzopardi filed an urgent application on behalf of Repubblika, where it was argued that given the seriousness of the case and its consequences, no more time can be lost in continuing to argue the case.

Repubblika said that it looks forward to presenting evidence which indicates that the current method of appointing the judiciary amounts to an infringement of the principle of judicial independence, one of the fundamental requirements of a democracy.

Lawyers Jason Azzopard and Simon Busuttil are appearing for the rule of law NGO.
