Couple arrested over false passports

Tista' taqra bil- Malti.

The parents of a months-old baby were arrested after attempting to leave Malta using false passports, with the father receiving an effective jail term and the mother a suspended one.

The two, a 30-year-old Sudanese man and a 20-year-old Eritrean woman, were seeking to take the catamaran to Sicily early on Sunday morning. But they were arrested by immigration officers after presenting false Norwegian passports.

The woman insisted that she had no idea that the documents were fake, while the man said that he only realised this was the case when he presented them at passport control.

In any case, both chose to file a guilty plea at the earliest possible opportunity.

Magistrate Nadine Lia sentenced both to a 6-month jail term, but suspended the jail term handed down to the woman for two years, warning her that she had to be responsible for her young child.
