53 new coronavirus cases were registered overnight after 1,736 swab tests were carried out in the last 24 hours, the health authorities announced on Monday.
The total number of active cases stands at 499 and 18 more patients made a recovery.
From the 78 cases registered on Sunday, 16 cases were family members of previously known cases, 2 were work colleagues, 2 imported, two were direct contacts of positive cases, 2 cases from a body building competition, 24 from St Joseph Home and 2 other cases from homes of the elderly.
This morning the Ministry for health announced that an 86-year-old woman has died of COVID-19. She is the 16th coronavirus victim registered in Malta.
The Ministry for Health said that the 86-year-old died at the Infectious Diseases Unit, IDU and that the woman had other underlying medical conditions.
On Sunday, Malta registered its highest single-day increase as 78 new cases were registered.
