Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has cancelled a lunch meeting with Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, The Malta Independent has reported. The lunch meeting was due to be held on Friday in Rome.
Muscat is expected to travel to Rome on Friday to participate in a panel discussion on managing migration in the Mediterranean at the Mediterranean Dialogues. He is also expected to meet Pope Francis on Saturday.
A group of academics sent a letter to the Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Alessandro D’Errico asking for the cancellation of the visit of Prime Minister Muscat to Pope Francis.
The Malta Independent said that its sources confirmed that Conte has suddenly and inexplicably cancelled his business lunch with Muscat. It is not yet clear if the event has been cancelled over the latest political developments in Malta.
A spokesperson for Conte’s office confirmed with Newsbook.com.mt that the meeting has been cancelled. Asked for a reason, the spokesperson said that it was due to the Italian Premier’s commitment.
