A family in Adelaide Hills returned to their home to find a koala perched on the Christmas tree in their living room.

The owner found the juvenile koala sitting in the plastic tree, surrounded by baubles, stars and snowflakes.

Speaking on ABC Radio Adelaide, Amanda McCormick explained that when they returned home, the family dog went straight for the Christmas tree and started sniffing around it. She noticed all the decorations on the floor and as she looked up saw the koala in the tree.

The koala made it into the house after her daughter left the door open.

Wildlife rescuers were called in to assist.

Writing on Facebook, 1300Koalaz, a charity working in the field of rescue, rehabilitation and release, where possible of sick, injured and orphaned koalas wrote that initially the operator thought that it was a prank call.

McCormick was quoted saying that the koala “didn’t want to leave actually, they had a bit of a fight trying to get her off the tree. I think she was quite comfortable.”
