The Individual Investor Programme (IIP), or citizenship-by-investment scheme, should be suspended immediately, stated Partit Nazzjonalista (PN).

In a statement, the Spokesperson for the Opposition for Citizenship Karol Aquilina insisted that in light of what has been aired in the French television programme, which also brought about the suspension of two agents’ licences, the entire citizenship scheme should be suspended effective immediately.

The Party has stressed that an inquiry should be issued so that each passport sale made through agents employed at Chetcuti Cauchi Advisors Ltd. could be investigated.

On Sunday, a French news programme Enquête Exclusive aired footage showing two Maltese agents working in the passports-for-cash scheme boasting of their close relationship with senior Government ministers.

When this story started being reported by local media outlets, the Government agency which regulates the IIP programme suspended both agents’ licenses.

PN insisted these recent reports confirm that the Government is “the most corrupt in Maltese history”. It added that Malta’s reputation has been damaged, and will continue to do so.

‘The same people they boasted about had the power to suspend their liscense’

In a tweet, Journalist Matthew Caruana Galizia explained that there is now a situation where passports-for-cash agent boasts about trading in influence with the Prime Minister and Julia Farrugia, and at the same time the agent’s license is suspended on the orders of those same politicians.

“Everything we warned about is happening”

Member of Parliament Roberta Metsola stated that “everything we warned about with the sale of Maltese & EU citizenship with no genuine link to Malta is happening”.  She added that this is not the face that Malta should be showing to the world.

She stressed to end this monetization of basic rights & corruption loophole and requested a ban on passport sales.

Immediate police action

Activists forming part of Occupy Justice stated that they expect immediate police action following the revelations in the documentary.

Additionally, the organisation also expects investigations into each and every one of these revelations.  “All those implicated in this web of corruption should resign immediately.”

It added that suspending Chetcuti Cauchi’s licence is just a diversion, a “sop to the uproar caused” by this video.
